Designing for Patient Safety Seminar

The Center for Health Design (CHD) hosted an invitation-only seminar titled, “Designing for Patient Safety” on October 11-12, 2011. CHD, in partnership with Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI), received funding from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to conduct this event, which took place at Virtua Health's newest facility, Virtua Voorhees. Participants had the unique opportunity to collaborate with like-minded professionals and be a part of a workgroup that will change industry design standards around patient safety.

Invitees included healthcare specialists and experts who, for two days, engaged in discussions that explored ways in which patient safety concerns can be integrated into the healthcare facility design process. The discussion objectives included:

  • Understand how safety concerns are identified and resolved during the healthcare facility planning and design process.
  • Identify key methodologies and tools from other fields that may be adapted for use during the design of healthcare facilities.
  • Develop consensus around key issues to address patient safety concerns at different stages in the healthcare facility design process.
