Mt. Hood’s Timberline Lodge, a WPA project from the 1930’s noted for both its art and architecture, was the architectural inspiration for the project. There are four monumental site specific works that are incorporated into the architecture, including over 300 feet of custom stair rails, a massive carved glass window in the chapel, and two 10’x16’ limestone bas reliefs on the exterior clock tower.
Paintings, pastels and photographs from artists working through the Pacific Northwest fill the walls of the public waiting and corridor areas throughout the building, with more than 500 original pieces throughout the building.
The original work in the public spaces on the first three floors honors the feeling of artwork typically seen in period Arts and Crafts interiors. This is particularly true of the 4’x16’ iconic Oregon landscape painting in the main lobby. The dining room, which is the most heavily embellished Arts and Crafts space, has black and white photography reminiscent of that period of time.
This beautiful project completed in July 2008 and was the result of extensive collaboration amongst the owner, the architects, the art committee and the local artistic community, the Family Council and the SacredHeart Foundation.
