St. Elizabeth Healthcare Ambulatory Care and Urgi-Care Center

  • Firm’s role on the project: Planner and Architect of Record, Interior Designer, Project Manager
  • Type of facility: Outpatient Care and emergency Services
  • Specialty services (e.g. cancer center): Diagnostic Imaging: MRI, CT, Nuclear Medicine, Women’s Imaging
  • Project Link: http://www.arrayhfs.com/cs-ste1.html

Located in the ‘Westside’ neighborhood of the City of Covington, access to this site is the main artery into one of the region’s most important urban communities. Positioned on a prominent parcel, the Ambulatory Care Center needed to blend within the neighborhood’s historic district as well as offer the newest healthcare technology to the city’s residents.

The siting of the facility was altered as the design team met with community members who shared their vision for their neighborhood. The foundation of the design was to create a wellness and community-oriented experience for the patients and staff with leading edge diagnostic and primary care services. The patients healing experience begins upon entering the site. The facility design embraces the campus concept with ease of parking, recognizable exterior wayfinding, healing gardens and direct access to appropriate entrances.

A ‘Main Street’ circulation corridor links the central registration / lobby / bistro area with all diagnostic imaging, dialysis and lab service sub-waiting areas as well as the Emergency Department on the first floor with primary and specialty physicians. The second floor contains a major primary care provider physician group as well. A third floor awaits fitout as tenants are obtained.

The colors utilized throughout the facility reflect the surrounding neighborhood. Stone and wood are used in the public areas, with the colors made richer by the abundant natural light allowed by the large windows. Diagnostic areas and the ED are linked by a common palette and pattern that runs the entire length of the departments, all connected by staff corridors and entered by patients through the sub-waiting areas.

The interior lighting was designed to exceed all energy codes and has been conceived to enhance the architectural elements of the interiors. Pendant lighting is utilized sparingly for the highest impact at such central locations as the bistro. Exterior lighting is achieved with modern lamp posts as well as halogen lights in the sidewalks uplighting the canopy columns.
