Your firm's role on the project: Architect
Type of facility: Rehabilitation Center
Number of beds: 40
Specialty services: Inpatient; Outpatient; ADL Unit; Therapy; Administrative Offices
Project vision/goals: The Rehabilitation Hospital of Wisconsin was established to provide more extensive services than can be given in an acute-care hospital inpatient setting, at a similar cost to patients, businesses and insurers.
Physicians, nurses, and physical therapists provide highly specialized treatment for stroke, brain injury, neurological disorders, multiple trauma, spinal cord injury, and orthopedic injuries. The hospital features all private rooms, dedicated/secure unit for patients following brain injury, a therapy swimming pool, large inpatient/outpatient gym, therapy courtyard, and an apartment for daily living training.
Lessons learned: Research demonstrates that patients treated in this type of clinically advanced setting that specializes in rehabilitation care can have better outcomes.
Additional details: The Rehabilitation Hospital offers a tranquil setting nestled in a scenic residential Waukesha neighborhood. The main level houses inpatient functions including a large physical therapy gym. Full height windows present stunning views to the rolling landscape. Common dining, family and day room areas provide both active space for socialization and quiet space for family visits. Three clearly defined patient room wings culminate at the central nurse station. Clerestory windows and generous ceiling height emphasize the nurse station, and allow natural light to penetrate the center of the building. Taking advantage of the sloped site, the design team created a distinctive lower level entrance for outpatient services.
