KMD Architects

KMD is a full service architecture firm headquartered in San Francisco with offices in Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, New York, Mexico City, and Shanghai.

Since 1963, KMD has combined innovation and creativity to provide exceptional architecture, planning, and urban design services. The firm's designs have been built in a wide number of geographical areas, including 30 states in the United States and 15 countries around the world.

The practice encompasses healthcare, office, retail, mixed-use, housing, hotels/resorts, academic, justice, historic renovation, and urban design. The principals of KMD feel that a variety of design experience enriches all of their efforts through the benefits of crossfertilization. In the past two decades KMD has won over 200 design awards and international design competitions, including over 40 awards from the American Institute of Architects and 14 from Modern
Healthcare.

KMD nurtures a design philosophy that emphasizes the emotional content of design and focuses on the user in the design process. Indeed, the notion that creative and highly individual solutions must be found that are unique to a client, to a program and/or a location, is central to KMD's ethos as an architectural firm. Through the years, KMD has been a testing ground for new ideas, a school for bright young architects, an incubator for research topics, and a place where people
are encouraged to question accepted paradigms.

KMD continues its relentless pursuit of connecting function, need, and context, and most importantly, to develop a unique sense of place, guided always by its most basic conviction: the fundamental belief that great architecture is less a matter of style than of discover and innovation.
