Project Mission/Vision: For more than a decade, LEO A DALY has provided complete planning, architecture and engineering services for multi-phased building expansion and renovation projects at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, a 178-bed, 518,000-square-foot facility in Dover, N.H. In 2008, the team was engaged to convert semi-private patient rooms to private rooms in the existing facility, along with designing a new inpatient tower on the congested and over-built existing campus site.
LEO A DALY provided a patient- and family-centered design for the 160,000-square-foot inpatient tower addition that includes 64 private medical-surgical universal patient rooms, a new birth center and an education center.
The new birth center includes a 24-bed obstetrics and pediatrics unit with a C-section room and nursery. The 15,000-square-foot education/conference center features a high-tech public resource center, as well as provides ancillary laboratory, human resources, social work, community relations, materials management and housekeeping services.
Although the owner decided not to pursue LEED® certification, energy-conscious "green" design concepts were incorporated and the design team worked with the local electric company to maximize utility rebates. The green components include: large thermal mass exterior walls; air-side economizers for “free cooling” when conditions permit; variable speed drives on major air-handlers; a significant amount of recycled materials; and enhanced indoor environmental quality.
