Your firm's role on the project: Architect, Engineer, Interior Designer
Type of facility: Hospital Expansion and Renovation
Size: 230,000 square feet
Project details: Consistent with the goal of being a leader in the region's healthcare market, Southern Ohio Medical Center completed the next major phase of the hospital's Master Facility Plan, which included new construction of two major additions, renovation of existing facilities, utility and site improvements and other associated site work.
The five-story patient tower sits predominately as the focal point of the campus. The patient tower consists of all private rooms, a new multi-story main lobby and a brand new heart center. The Heart Center includes a 12 private bed cardiovascular unit, three Cath labs, a cardiac testing area and a private waiting area with a dedicated entrance conveniently located directly off the new main lobby.
A separate addition upgrades SOMC's emergency and surgical services.
- 12 new operating rooms
- New and expanded Sterile Processing Department
- 3 new emergency trauma rooms
- 23 new emergency exam rooms
- Expanded Clinical Decision Unit (Observation) and Fast Track Unit
- Expanded waiting areas
SOMC wanted to create an environment that had the "wow" factor for the local community - an interior space that rivaled "a five-star hotel" - to express the hospital's commitment to providing top-notch healthcare. A 24-foot high lobby lends lightness and grandeur to the hospital's entrance. The hilly, rural landscape is referenced in the hospital's interior design scheme through the use of a natural color palette and high quality terracotta, stone and wood materials.
