Last week's Environments for Aging conference drew more than 500 design professionals, owners/operators, product manufacturers/vendors, and others to Orlando, FL. Attendees participated in more than 50 educational sessions, toured a state-of-the art memory care/assisted living facility, viewed the latest products and services, and enjoyed several networking opportunities.
Opening keynote speaker Bill Thomas, M.D., kicked things off Sunday night by challenging our view of aging. Read Sara Marberry's blog post about his talk here.

A geriatrician and international authority on eldercare, Dr. Thomas is a self-described “nursing-home abolitionist,” recognizing that America’s nursing home buildings are “aging faster than the people living inside them.” This led him to imagine a radical alternative to...

viewPebble Project* partners, ER One at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and Herman Miller Healthcare recently released findings from their disaster-responsive emergency department project. Entitled, ‘Project ER One”, teams from both of these organizations worked together to create a strong emergency room infrastructure that can handle day-to-day operations along with a sudden influx of patients, that could happen when a natural disaster or terrorist attack occurs.
As part of the project, the team identified requirements and key problems that needed to be addressed. A top requirement for...
viewPebble Project* partner, University Medical Center at Princeton, has been featured in The Times of Trenton, focusing on the evidence-based design (EBD) aspect of the new facility. President and CEO of Princeton HealthCare System, Barry Rabner, was interviewed about the new hospital, which is scheduled to open May 22.
“The biggest discovery was that we had these important goals for the building: reducing infection, improving efficiency. It’s a real discovery that the design of the building can do that,” Rabner said. “It’s not just a container. It actually can have design features that improve patient outcomes, patient satisfaction, reduce errors, reduce falls.”...

A decorative fountain in a Milwaukee-area hospital was found to be the cause of eight people contracting Legionnaires’ disease in 2010. Although all eight people were not patients at the time of exposure, walking and sitting by the water wall may have been enough to contract the disease.
This is the second documented outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in a healthcare setting, according to The Washington Post. The first was in 2007, when two cancer patients were diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease after being exposed to a contaminated wall-type water fountain.
