EDAC

Evidence-Based Design Accreditation and Certification

EDAC Update: June 2008

Each month we share the latest information regarding program development and volunteer opportunities.  We invite you to share this information with your colleagues.   If you know anyone that would like to be added to our e-mail list please contact Callie Fahsholz at cfahsholz@healthdesign.org.

Recent Activities

Study Guides

Our EDAC volunteers are working hard to prepare comprehensive study materials.  At the beginning of July we look forward to having a draft from our publishers of the first of three study guides.  We will then send the guide to our Nurture, our educational partners, for review and feedback. This means that we are on track to release the exam early next year.  The handbook for the exam will be available roughly three months prior to the exam release.

Commentary on EDAC from The Center's President

In June's copy of Healthcare Design magazine, The Center's President Debra Levin comments on EDAC and evidence-based design in her column:

"...Many people have grabbed hold of the appropriate buzz words and concepts and have run with them, having nothing more than a superficial knowledge of what the literature says or understanding how to      incorporate an evidence-based design process into their projects.  EDAC is a roadmap for how to do just that.  The role of EDAC is to educate and accredit individuals on their understanding of how to base design decisions on available, credible evidence...The goal of the program is not to test people on their knowledge of current available evidence, but rather to test them on the proper process to identify, hypothesize, implement, gather, and report the data associated with their project."

Upcoming Events

EDAC at the Healthcare Design Conference

At this year's Healthcare Design Conference in Washington D.C. there will be an EDAC exam preparation session.  This session will go over the study guides and exam.

Sunday, November 9, 2008; 9:00 am-5:00 pm

Speakers: EDAC Volunteers and Study Guide contributors

Session W01-EDAC: Exam Preparation Seminar

Information and theories abound about evidence-based design (EBD), but until now, no one has defined or standardized the EBD context or process.  The EDAC program is designed so that anyone who is interested in becoming more knowledgeable about the evidence-based design process can learn, study, take, and pass the EDAC exam.  Maximize your chances for success--join us for a lively, informative and practical workshop, where you will have the opportunity to learn EDAC content directly from the experts who wrote the study guides and begin to prepare yourself for the exam.

The morning will start with an overview of what you can expect to be tested on in the exam, followed by two in-depth sessions and will conclude with a panel Q&A discussion with the EDAC experts.  Attendees can choose from three sections offered during the two sessions: the healthcare delivery system, research, and/or the design process.

There will also be a roundtable discussion discussing what all the buzz is about.  Is EDAC for you, if so, now what?  During the roundtable, the reality and fiction of Evidence-based Accreditation and Certification will be explained.  What do you need to know to prepare for the exam?  Will there be continuing education requirements?  How was the program developed?  Who created the exam and study guides?  These questions and more will be answered during this informative session.

Behind the Scenes

Our dedicated volunteers are continuously and diligently working on content for the study guides.  We are also working on the Continuing Education process for EDAC so that your education and expertise will continue past your initial certification.
