Fitness, Social Interaction, and the Lifelong Community: How the Built Environment Can Influence Wellness Across the Lifespan

2/10/2010, 1 -2 p.m. EST

Presented by: Jessica Wolfe and Scott Ball

As more Americans live longer there is a growing interest in the services and settings that help support aging well. A growing body of research now shows that keeping fit through regular exercise and maintaining age-diversified, social connections are vital for continued well-being. In this presentation, we discuss recent trends in longevity, including advances in the management of chronic conditions, the role of exercise and fitness, and new types of residential and community-based programs for Boomers and mature individuals. We review existing and emerging models for aging well and aging in place and suggest how certain aspects of the built environment, in particular, "lifelong communities," can offer substantial appeal and opportunities for professionals and consumers alike.

Out with the New, In with the Old: Reinvigorate your Existing Building!

5/12/2010, 1 – 2 p.m EST

Presented by: Grant Warner, AIA, LEED AP

With the growing need for Senior housing, renovation of existing buildings is becoming not only more important but crucial to Senior Living communities. Renovating existing buildings, instead of simply demolishing and starting anew, is also very sustainable (i.e. "Green.") This program will include an overview of the processes and tools used to evaluate the physical condition and potential for alteration of existing buildings. It will include case studies of renovated projects including the experiences of involving State Licensing and Local Building authorities in the process. New technologies that help make older buildings compliant with current Senior Living needs and newer codes will also be discussed.

Young Designers Take on Renovating a SNF

Wednesday, August 11, 2010, 1:00 PM EST

Presented by: Jack L. Bowersox. Kaye Brown, Ph.D., and Skip Gregory, NCARB

The inaugural AIAS/SAGE Student Design Competition "Rethinking Home" challenges students in design schools throughout North America to re-conceptualize the nursing home typology by using design precedents found within a typical home to create a new sense of place. The competition encouraged architects-in-training to explore ways to implement the Rethinking Home: Programming Guidelines, written for the competition, to the real but fictionally-named case study, Pelican Point, a skilled nursing home located in Florida. Students were encouraged and rewarded for design excellence that integrates function, aesthetics, structure, details and fun and for utilizing opportunities provided by the site to offer a healing environment. The winning entries from the competition will be reviewed for the audience along with the jury's comments.
