Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center
Cincinnati, OH

Cincinnati Children's is planning to build a $89 million, 232,000 square foot freestanding pediatric community facility 25 miles north of its base hospital. It is currently planned to be hospital and ambulatory care center, with an emergency department sized for 50,000 annual visits; six operating rooms with capacity for another two; imaging capacity, including MRI with sedation, CT, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, and fluoroscopy; and expanded surgical and medical clinics. The design team is BHDP Architecture and Karlsberger Architects.

Cincinnati Children's has a lot of existing data to use for its Pebble Project research. It is one of only seven healthcare organizations in the United States - and the only pediatric organization to receive the Pursuing Perfection grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. This work has produced 18 Strategic Improvement Targets that deal with patient safety, patient flow, access, family-centered care, clinical excellence, and patient satisfaction. Extensive data collection has taken place to support these initiatives.

In addition to these efforts, Cincinnati Children's has a facilities master plan in process. As part of this master planning work, a cultural assessment of the workforce is being conducted. These data, along with employee satisfaction survey conducted every three years, will provide the basis of study for improvements to the working environment.

Also, since the opening of the Location A building on the main campus in September 2002, environmental data (particulate counts, molds, and bacteria studies) have been taken on critical areas of the facilities to gauge the effectiveness of the whole building HEPA filtration system.
