Recommended Reading

Another industry-related book, recommended by CHD staff member Carolyn Quist:

Arthur W. FrankAt Will of the Body: Reflections on Illness
In this deeply affecting memoir, Frank explores the events of illness from within: the transformation from person to patient, the pain, the wonder, and the ceremony of recovery. To illuminate what illness can teach us about life, Frank draws upon his encounters with serious illness- a heart attack at age thirty nine and, a year later, a diagnosis of cancer. In poignant and clear prose, he offers brilliant insights into what happens when our bodies and emotions are pushed to extremes. Ultimately, he examines what it means to be human.

Coming Soon: Jain Malkin's New Book

A must read for design professionals, healthcare providers, and leaders, A Visual Reference for Evidence-Based Design, written by Jain Malkin in association with The Center reveals bold new approaches to patient care. Jain explains basic research tools and methods and offers a step-by-step guide to creating a research agenda. She also explores the implications of research, and connects the dots between research findings and the consequences they hold in healthcare facilities. The simple-to-follow format includes over 300 annotated project photographs in addition to spatial plans linked to research and commentary.

CHD Staff Member Natalie Zensius shares about the project on the CHD Blog.

Call For Submissions For The HERD Journal

In November The Center in conjunction with Vendome Group, LLC will launch The Health Environment Research & Design Journal at HEALTHCARE DESIGN.07. HERD will be the first peer reviewed, interdisciplinary journal focusing on research about the effect of the healthcare environment on clinical, economic, organizational, and cultural performance, as well as the experience of patients, families, and professional staff. This cross discipline journal will foster dissemination of research findings, their translation into practice, and help guide important design decisions.

HERD is the only one of its kind and its interdisciplinary focus encourages evidence-based articles that will build a body of knowledge that will ultimately improve the healthcare environment. HERD Journal is a peer-reviewed journal with an interdisciplinary editorial advisory board representing the healthcare industry, design industry, environmental psychology, organizational effectiveness, and other related fields of interest.

The Journal is currently seeking articles, research papers, essays and editorials related to the study of healthcare environments and the dissemination of research and the effects of design on organizational, patient and staff outcomes.

To contribute contact the co-editors: Jaynelle F. Stichler, DNSc, Associate Professor of Nursing at San Diego State University, School of Nursing, Concentration Chair of Health Systems Leadership & Innovation; or D. Kirk Hamilton, FACHA, AIA, Associate Professor of Architecture and Interim Director of the Center for Health Systems & Design at Texas A&M University.

EDAC News

Last month we told you that CHD is developing a program to assess professionals on their ability to implement an evidence-based design process into healthcare construction and design. As of July, a detailed content outline has been drafted to identify possible examination items. A dedicated group of professionals will work with a psychometric firm in the next few months to develop test questions.

We will provide more details regarding this assessment program at the EDAC Program Review at HEALTHCARE DESIGN.07. This focus workshop will be conducted Sunday, November 4th from 9:15am to 11:15am.
