CHD JOINS FORCES WITH KAISER PERMANENTE IN GLOBAL HEALTH AND SAFETY INITIATIVE An influential group of leading health care systems have joined together to form the Global Health and Safety Initiative (GHSI) – a first-of-its-kind sector wide partnership to green the health care industry and improve patient and worker health and safety. The initiative has been established by Kaiser Permanente (KP), the nation’s largest non-profit health care system, in partnership with The Center for Health Design (CHD), Health Care Without Harm (HCWH), and Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (H2E) and more than a dozen leading health care organizations. Donna Deckard with The Center for Health Design and Bill Ravenesi with Healthcare Without Harm are leading the High Performance Healing Environment work stream, for the Global Health and Safety Initiative (GHSI). This multi-disciplinary group will identify high-priority needs for the built environment. NEW RESEARCH REPORT: THE EFFECT OF ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN ON REDUCING NURSING ERRORS IN ACUTE CARE SETTINGS This study, completed by Dr. Habib Chaudhury (Simon Fraser University) and Dr. Atiya Mahmood (Oregon State University), provides specific recommendations about environmental interventions that can support the reduction of errors in the nursing unit. CHD PARTNERS WITH NACHRI TO IMPROVE PEDIATRIC SETTINGS AND HEALTH OUTCOMES FOR CHILDREN CHD has recently formed a partnership with the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI) to produce Transforming Care In Children’s Hospitals Through Environmental Design, a book-like publication and visual reference guide. The publication, to be released May 2008, will include a literature review, recommendations, and business case. The visual reference guide, to be released October 2008, will be a web-based compilation of exemplary children’s hospitals and facilities.
HERMAN MILLER INC. FORMS RESEARCH PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CENTER Herman Miller, Inc. will provide funding for the next three years to support both proposed research initiatives and ongoing projects from among those prioritized by the CHD CHER research committee and will be both broad in scope and niche specific. SADLER INTERNATIONAL HEALING ARTS COMPETITION The competition honors model projects in the field of arts in healthcare and comes with a cash prize and complimentary registration to the Society’s annual conference – Embracing Our Past, Shaping Our Future: 21st Century Innovations, to be held April 16 - 19, 2008 in Philadelphia, PA. CHD BOARD MEMBER CRAIG ZIMRING INVOLVED IN AWARD WINNING PROJECT The Neurosciences Critical Care Unit at Emory University Hospital has been selected as the recipient of the prestigious 2008 ICU Design Citation Award. The product of a unique collaboration between Owen Samuels, MD, director of neuroscience critical care at Emory, and Craig Zimring, an environmental psychologist and professor in the College of Architecture at Georgia Tech, the Unit was designed and built around evidence-based design principles.
