Improving the Patient Experience: Best Practices for Safety-Net Clinic Redesign

This report is the result of a partnership between The Center for Health Design and The California Health Care Foundation. Research shows that the physical environment of health care facilities affects patients, staff, and families by impacting patient safety and quality of care. Recent analyses of the physical features of health care facilities have primarily focused on acute care settings, but there is some evidence that the physical environment plays an important role in outpatient settings as well. Read more, and get the report.

A Practitioner's Guide to Evidence-Based Design

This guide is an easy-to-use tool for evidence-based design (EBD) practitioners and stakeholders, and focuses on practice-based research as opposed to academic research. Learn how to apply the evidence, and conduct research to assess effectiveness of design projects.

An Introduction to Evidence-Based Design: Exploring Healthcare and Design (EDAC Study Guide One)

Learn how evidence can be applied to healthcare building projects through an exploration of healthcare delivery systems; and understand the connection between research and design within healthcare. Download the free pdf; or order a free printed copy (shipping and handling fees apply).

Building the Evidence-Base: Understanding Research in Healthcare Design (EDAC Study Guide Two)

Study Guide Two provides an in-depth look into the research process as it applies to healthcare design. Since research is fundamental to the evidence-based design process, practitioners must understand the process of how to search for relevant existing information and how to recognize the hierarchy of credible evidence.

Integrating Evidence-Based Design: Practicing the Healthcare Design Process (EDAC Study Guide Three)

Study Guide Three ties research to the healthcare design process. Vital evidence-based design steps and processes are described and inserted into a typical design process. For instance, readers can learn about using evidence to inform the project's guiding principles during visioning.

Healthcare Leadership Project

This series of resources helps healthcare decisionmakers become more familiar with evidence-based design so they can implement it into their building projects. The tools provided are a free resource available in two formats:

Evidence for Innovation: Transforming Children's Hospitals Through the Physical Environment

In collaboration with National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI), this project applies evidence-based design research, practice, and principles to pediatric hospitals and medical facilities. This book is available for purchase on the NACHRI website, along with a web-based visual reference guide.

A Visual Reference for Evidence-Based Design

The long awaited book by health care design leader, industry expert and CHD board member Jain Malkin. Health Environments Research & Design (HERD) Journal

The Health Environments Research and Design Journal (HERD) is produced by Vendome Group in conjunction with The Center for Health Design. HERD is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal whose mission is to enhance the knowledge and practice of evidence-based healthcare design by disseminating research findings, discussing issues and trends, and translating research to practice. Visit the HERD website for more information or to subscribe.
