Hospital CEO
Design is an Essential Strategic Element

(Excerpt from Journal of Healthcare Design, Volume X, proceedings of the Tenth Symposium on Healthcare Design)

"We have found that there is a major positive impact on morale of staff because of the built environment. We believe that when there is a nursing shortage and competitive recruiting situation, we should do anything we can do to improve employee morale, especially at a time when we can't just give everyone bonuses and automatic 10 percent salary increases.

It has also had an enormous impact on patients and families. Families and patients often talk about the impact of the built environment on their stay and on their healthcare experience.

I believe design is now an essential strategic element for our future...All of the things we're doing in terms of increasing efficiency, reducing the length of stay, and improving our mortality and morbidity are essential strategic investments. In this market, the mantra is "use it all," and design is an essential part of that investment."
