Evidence-Based Design in Practice

Case Study Florida Hospital Altamonte, Altamonte Springs, FL

In the design of Florida Hospital Altamonte in Altamonte Springs, Florida, Gresham Smith  critically interpreted relevant research and evidence to develop effective design solutions. The project included a new six-story south tower, a new three-story east addition, a renovation of approximately 16,000 square feet, an annex to the central energy plant, and site work.

Available evidence suggests that patient and family-centered care can lead to improved outcomes, so the design is intended to foster social support for patients. Patient rooms include a family zone that comfortably accommodates family members, and advanced interactive communication technology is intended to encourage family involvement and improve the patient experience.

There is compelling evidence that daylight and views of nature contribute to positive outcomes, such as reduced pain, improved sleep, and lower staff stress. The new main lobby appears to float in a pool of calming water. A healing garden was created as the central organizing design element on which the whole building is focused and serves as a place for both contemplation and orientation. A retreat room in each nursing unit provides nurses with a space to quietly escape the stressful environment, separate from the staff break rooms.

As described by the design team, "Nothing is allowed in the rooms except the nursing staff, soothing artwork and some music; no food, no TV, no microwave, no refrigerators...just lounge chairs, some piped-in music and," in reference to the large windows in each room, "a great view."
