An interdisciplinary team of Philips designers, clinicians and data analysts was tasked by Westchester Medical Center to conduct a feasibility study on a local hospital in order to assess the effectiveness of their current facilities and understand existing community perceptions, with the goal of creating a roadmap for future development after a potential merger.  Although the effort was initially intended to be completely ‘undercover’, it quickly evolved into a catalyst for both sides to build a relationship and rally around. 

The resulting masterplan positions the hospital campus for future growth, creates multiple points for community engagement and offers improvements to the staff, patient and family experience.  Additionally, the team visualized several key spaces within the masterplan in order to present the community with a new vision of care. 

Several key tools were employed during the course of the project, including:

  • Community, Staff and EMS Surveys
  • Data Analysis of Market Trends and Patient Volumes
  • Historical Site Mapping
  • Blocking/Stacking Diagrams
  • Conceptual Renderings of Key Spaces
  • Building Information Modeling
  • Future State Animations

David Ruthven is an award-winning architect whose focus on the intersection of healthcare environments and technology has yielded many unique design solutions.  His signature work, Patient Room 2020, has been featured in several publications, including Metropolis, Fortune, WIRED, FastCompany, and the Wall Street Journal.   Dave has worked in the design industry for 10+ years on projects ranging from new, urban high-rise hospital centers to departmental renovations at existing facilities. He is a frequent presenter at numerous conferences, including Stanford Design for Health, AIA Healthcare Design Academy and H2T Healthcare Technology Conference.

 

Robert Dalton
Design Consultant, Philips Design

Robert is an award winning Strategic Design Consultant for the Healthcare Transformation Services business of Philips. He has over 10 years of strategic, environment and experience design consulting expertise and has lead consulting engagements for numerous Fortune 100 clients spanning technology, energy, financial, hospitality, retail and healthcare industries. His designs have won various awards with recent accomplishments including a Healthcare Design Award, the Avatar Patient Experience Award and a ‘Best of the Best Red Dot Award.  Robert holds a bachelor’s degree in Industrial and Interaction Design from Syracuse University.

 

Colleen Wittman, EDAC
Design Consultant, Phillips Design 

Colleen Wittman is a design consultant for the Healthcare Transformation Services business of Philips Healthcare. She has 8+ years of experience encompassing architectural, interior and environmental graphic design.  Colleen is skilled at designing environments that link brand identities and service strategies to create holistic design solutions that improve the user experience. Before joining Philips, she worked as a Senior Designer for the international design consultancy Pentagram. Colleen is the recipient of several design awards for healthcare design concepts including most recently iF and RedDdot. She holds a Master of Interior Architecture and Product Design from Kansas State University.
