"Designing for Safety in Health Facilities. More than Meets the Eye"

As architects and designers who create spaces where healthcare services are delivered, what can we do to design the safest environment? At a minimum we need to build spaces where occupants are not in danger of becoming physically harmed as they interact with their surroundings. We rely on local building codes, standards such as the CSA (Canadian Standards Association) and guidelines like the FGI Guidelines for Design and Construction of Health Care Facilities. As designers there is so much more we can do. Please join Michele as she highlights some design elements that can add value and increase safety in the healthcare environment.

Event Venue:

Haworth
55 University Avenue
Toronto, ON M5J 2H7
Canada

Learning Objectives

  1. Gain an understanding of how designers enhance the health and welfare of the users and staff through an exploration of built projects.
  2. Explore the elements of ‘safe design’ for diverse patient populations.
  3. Identify opportunities to add value by integrating durable and sustainable finishes in the healthcare environment.
  4. Discuss possible safety hazards and how to help mitigate risk.
