"The Big Five: Healthcare Planning and Design Strategies for an Adaptable Future"

Healthcare buildings of today must be flexible in order to remain relevant tomorrow. How can we design buildings that remain malleable in the face of uncertainty? This lecture will cover trends in health systems, patient-centered care and technology that drive the need for flexibility and dive into “The Big Five” design decisions that provide adaptability in an ever-changing healthcare landscape.

  1. Explore aspects of population health and evolving technology in healthcare facilities and their impacts on hospital design and construction decisions
  2. Identify and understand the impact of floor to floor heights, column spacing, fixed vertical elements, targeted zones of flexibility, and resiliency on a healthcare facility’s future adaptability
  3. Apply the concept of targeted zones of flexibility in projects
  4. Identify building resiliency measures that conceive of healthcare facilities as part of our national infrastructure

Erin Nunes Cooper, AIA, LEED AP, Principal, Director of Project Management | Ballinger | Philadelphia, PA 

Erin Nunes Cooper is a Principal and Director of Project Management at Ballinger specializing in healthcare planning and design. Erin brings high aspirations for the quality of the built environment and the patient, family, and care team experience. She has managed complex healthcare projects with a critical emphasis on sustainable building design and integrating new technology into the design process. Erin developed a formal process for guiding project stakeholders through decision-making using role-playing workshops with 3D printed model pieces. She speaks at industry events and conferences on important healthcare issues and design process innovations.
