This webinar offers a case study of IU Health Bloomington Hospital. One of the main challenges of this project was creating a flexible space that was safe and secure, but highly focused on hospitality and positive patient environments. This team discussed the ideal vision for the unit with the client and through intentional communication and focused listening, a plan was developed by the staff which Guidon implemented into a program space and floor plan. Using 3D modeling and mock-up, the team developed a thorough understanding of the integrated case work.

A detailed LEAN design process in the beginning of the project improved unit flow, increased patient privacy, and created patient on-boarding and off-boarding procedures. The design is highly functional for the staff yet inviting and welcoming to the patient, provides intuitive wayfinding, and offers several innovative features. Come hear their story including outcomes, initial post-occupancy observations, and important lessons learned.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize three key concepts for safe and functional psychiatric unit design.
  • Describe LEAN processes developed through day in the life exercises, and how to use them to address critical gaps in patient safety.
  • Identify three innovative design safety features of the IU Health Bloomington psychiatric unit.
  • Apply the importance of a collaborative design approach that includes all perspectives spanning multiple disciplines – from executives to clinicians.
