Kent State University Design and Health Symposium: Re-Envisioning Emergency Department Design

Course Description

Presented by the Master of Healthcare Design Program at Kent State University’s College of Architecture and Environmental Design.

The fast cycle of patient admissions and variable levels of trauma, all heightened by security threats, make emergency departments (EDs) one of the most complex healthcare environments. Emergency departments, often overcrowded, consistently seek ways to streamline care for faster response time and patient throughput. Commonly known issues in the EDs entail operational inefficiencies, poor communication, security threats, wayfinding, prolonged wait time, and poor patient experience. This symposium gathers professionals of allied fields who can offer insight into the betterment of Emergency Departments’ design. Open to healthcare providers, architects, and designers, this symposium will explore how design can help streamline the process of care such that communication, wayfinding, security, efficiency, and patient throughput will improve.

Learning objectives:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the processes and issues in the EDs
  • Recognize the role of the design in supporting or hindering processes and/or issues within the EDs
  • Identify design solutions to overcome challenges in EDs along with challenges to their implementation
  • Identify the current evidence-based design practices and recommendations for EDs

Presentations:

  1. ED Security: Considerations for Creating a Safer Environment for Emergency Care - presented by Jon Huddy, AIA, NCARB : Senior Healthcare Planner at Huddy HealthCare Solutions
  2. Emergency Department Design and Productivity - presented by James Lennon, AIA :  Design Team Leader, HKS Team ED
  3. Surviving to Thriving; Pandemic Lessons and ED Design for Future Challenges - presented by James Augustine, MD, FACEP:  The National Director of Prehospital Strategy for USACS
