Health and wellness start with how people lead their daily lives. If the places we call home are located in neighborhoods which are thoughtfully planned, lifestyles will be inherently healthy. Neighborhoods that are reasonably compact, pedestrian friendly, filled with a mix of uses, and have pocket parks and other outdoor amenities throughout, enable residents and visitors to lead healthy lives as a part of their normal weekly routine. This is true for all socio-economic circumstances.

This webinar will host two architects who helped design a mixed-income, urban neighborhood in Cincinnati, Ohio called City West. This 48-acre project was part of the HOPE VI initiative which sought to replace mid-20th Century public housing projects with more urbane places worthy of pride and that uphold community health and wellness.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn how planners and architects confronted suburban-style codes and regulations which would have mandated unsafe and unhealthy vehicular-scaled blocks and pedestrian UN-friendly environments.
  • Discover how pedestrian and bike friendly street corridors, public spaces, and even the layouts of residential units instigate healthy living, socialization, and foster pride among residents regardless of age or background.
  • Review the healthy living aspects from one of the architects who has lived at City West since its inception.
  • Consider the project’s 15-year history with a critical eye and discover what design decisions worked and which ones didn’t.
