Presented by The Center, we will award up to $15,000 to support high quality research by new investigators around the world, whose research can fill critical gaps in the field of evidence-based design. It is open to graduate students, and other recent research degree recipients whose contributions reflect their potential to conduct original, empirical research to improve our understanding of the relationships between the physical environment and health-related outcomes & wellness.

Parker AIA NOMA NCARB LEED AP and Brendan Mullins of Stantec share how AI can help us create more accurate design prototype mock-ups. Attendees will analyze what is required to plan for and implement a full-scale mockup and how the combination of an analog and AI approach improves the overall design of the space. Following at 12 PM PT / 3 PM ET, Melanie Baumhover, AIA and Devan Swiontkowski, EDAC of BWBR, Brian Waiblinger of the Department of Social and Health Services & Behavioral Health Administration and Jim Wolch of BCRA will describe the design process of a new model of care for community-based treatment. In response to Governor Inslee’s plan to reform the Washington State’s behavioral health system and improve access to care, an innovative and immersive programming and design process for several new community-based facilities was employed. Substance use disorder (SUD) facility designers are increasingly turning to “evidence-based design” to support patients better. In the U.S., we often think of noise in the context of patient satisfaction and sleep, but noise (an inevitable characteristic of health care operations) has an impact on staff, too. The featured research can be considered when evaluating how we can provide better care for staff members, while keeping in mind how we manage noise. Created in partnership with the American Society for Health Care Engineering (ASHE), the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health (AAH), Facilities Guidelines Institute and Nursing Institute for Healthcare Design (NIHD), the Knowledge Repository is a searchable, open-access database on The Center’s website of over 6000 healthcare design research citations, articles, and Center-authored Key Point Summaries and Slidecasts.
