RESOURCES | Patient and Staff Safety

September 2021

Healthcare environments have the potential, through their design, to either mitigate or contribute to a wide range of adverse events, from healthcare associated infections, medication errors and patient handling injuries to self harm, falls or occupational injuries.

To support improved safety for all who use a facility – staff, patients, visitors and others – today’s design, facility and care professionals must advance their understanding of the environment’s wide-ranging impact on safety and incorporate the best and latest research, tools and design solutions throughout all healthcare settings.

FEATURED RESOURCE

Webinar

Safety Toolbox
OPEN ACCESS MADE POSSIBLE WITH THE SUPPORT OF GRAINGER

Webinar

This extensive collection of over Center-created resources – Issue Briefs, Design Tools, Design Strategies, Webinars, Project Briefs, Interviews, Blog Posts and more – will help planners, designers, suppliers and operators of all types of healthcare facilities better understand and consider the six predominant risk factors and the impact of design factors that may contribute to improved safety in those settings.

Safety Risk Assessment Tool
OPEN ACCESS MADE POSSIBLE WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE AGENCY FOR HEALTHCARE RESEARCH AND QUALITY (AHRQ)

Event

The Safety Risk Assessment (SRA) Toolkit is a proactive process that can mitigate risk; a discussion prompt for a multidisciplinary team; and, an evidence-based design (EBD) approach to identify solutions. The SRA targets six areas of safety (infections, falls, medication errors, security, injuries of behavioral health, and patient handling) as required in the FGI Guidelines. The goal of this tool is to provide guidance to consider the underlying (latent) conditions that can lead to harm.
