The Center for Health Design - Research in a Snap

In this edition . . .

You will find nearly 30 new Knowledge Repository entries from November and December with links to summaries/abstracts. Download the current edition.

Hot Topic: Evaluation Methods – As the research in the field of healthcare design grows, so do the options for conducting said research! While we have all heard of the “post-occupancy evaluation” or POE, there are several methods that can be used in a POE or other types of studies that may be less familiar. For instance, in this edition of the Snap, you will find a citation for a study that used the photovoice method, another that used “EEG data and virtual response testing,” and others that used virtual reality (VR). In the same way that every healthcare project is different, every study requires careful thought in selecting the appropriate research method. These papers are a great place to start when considering what method might be right for your study.

The research continues to accumulate on the link between the built environment and COVID-19 (most of which are free/open-access). The Center is still providing free access to our online Infection Control Toolbox and our always-open-access Knowledge Repository containing over 700 resources on infection control & prevention.

Other topic areas in the Snap include:

  • Experience
  • Safety
  • Care Across the Lifespan
  • Building Systems & Technology
  • Design & Evaluation

Utilization of a Standardized Post-Occupancy Evaluation to Assess the Guiding Principles of a Major Academic Medical Center

When you want to do a POE, where do you start? What tools are available to help you gather data and conduct your evaluation? A 2019 study by Altizer and colleagues takes a close look at a standardized POE tool, and how well it supported the evaluation process for a completed project. Watch the full Slidecast video here!
