The Center for Health Design - Research in a Snap

In this edition . . .

You will find nearly 40 new Knowledge Repository entries from January and February with links to summaries/abstracts. Download the current edition.

Hot Topic: Design and Evaluation – In this edition of the Snap, we find several more papers focused on a variety of design and evaluation methods - studies using everything from Lean-led design to Virtual Reality to economic assessment techniques. Researchers continue to find new and creative ways to better explore the link between design and health outcomes.

And the research continues to accumulate on the link between the built environment and COVID-19 (most of which are free/open-access). The Center is still providing free access to our online Infection Control Toolbox and our always-open-access Knowledge Repository containing over 800 resources on infection control & prevention.

Other topic areas in the Snap include:

  • Experience
  • Safety
  • Care Across the Lifespan
  • Building Systems & Technology
  • Design & Evaluation

Integrating Lean Exploration Loops Into Healthcare Facility Design: Schematic Phase

There are so many different ways Lean can be used in the design field: to improve the design process itself, to improve the actual design, or to improve the operational side of things. Oftentimes these applications overlap. In a 2017 study by Johnson and colleagues, researchers explore the use of Lean Exploration Loops (LELs) to improve efficiency during the schematic design phase of a surgical tower, and in turn, find ways to address operational issues related to the new design.
