Up-and-Comers
Most of the awards bestowed in our industry recognize past accomplishments. We sometimes overlook the fact that there are thousands of young architects, building and product designers, researchers and others who are just starting out, envisioning what can and will be, and dedicating their professional lives in this endeavor.
Our annual Joseph G. Sprague New Investigator Award reminds me of the importance and promise of this next generation, and our shared responsibility to encourage, support and celebrate them at every opportunity.
We recently announced this year’s award recipients – Rebecca Ames, M.S., a PhD student at Cornell University, and Homa Pesarakli, MArch, EDAC, a PhD student at Texas A&M University, have been selected as the 2024 Joseph G. Sprague New Investigator Award Recipients.
For Ames’ work using evidence-informed architectural theory to guide the design of intensive mental and behavioral health facilities for youth, and for Pesarakli’s investigation of the effect of intensive care unit layout features on interruptions during the medication process, they will each receive $15,000 in funding from The Center to support their ongoing research.
If you missed the announcement of their awards, as well the names and work by other top finalists, you can read it here.
I also want to make sure and extend our deepest appreciation to Joe Sprague, without whose personal generosity and commitment this award would not be possible. Asked in a 2013 interview for his advice to students and young professionals, he encouraged them to focus first on “making a difference in peoples’ lives.”
The Center’s commitment to young professionals extends beyond this award, from the thousands of open-access healthcare design resources on our website, to many other programs and offerings – EDAC certification, webinars and workshops, Affiliate membership and more – all offered at substantial “student-friendly” discounts.
Please join me in giving a warm and enthusiastic round of virtual applause to this year’s New Investigators!
Be Well,
Debra Levin, Hon. FASID, EDAC
President and CEO
