NOVEMBER 2024

New Collaborations

According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, more than 10,000 people turn 65 every day. By 2050 that population will skyrocket 47% from 58 million today to over 82 million.

Whether you’re creating care or living environments for your parents or yourself – or me! – the demand grows greater and more important every day.

The Center is rising to meet that challenge, expanding our role as an industry trailblazer in design for healthy aging research, resources, thought leadership and community building.

In keeping with our belief that you can get farther faster together, we’ve created an exciting and dynamic collaboration with the AIA Design for Aging (DFA) Knowledge Community and the Society for the Advancement of Gerontological Environments (SAGE), and in partnership with LeadingAge and The National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care, to produce the Healthy Aging by Design Showcase.

Comprised of six events throughout the year, the Showcase will feature and celebrate ground-breaking achievements, innovative solutions and best practices, leveraging this industry-leading cooperative’s collective expertise to shape the future of empowering and healthy aging environments that enhance quality of life across generations.

Our first Showcase events are right around the corner.

As individuals age, physical, mental, and societal challenges become more prevalent.

Nowhere is this demographic shift being felt more seismically than in the healthcare and living environments serving our aging population. People aged 65 and older are hospitalized twice as frequently as adults aged 45 to 64. The demand for all types of senior living – independent, assisted, skilled nursing and memory care – continues to outweigh supply.

Now in its seventh year, the Design for Healthy Aging workshop will provide you with not just a glimpse into that future, but the research, resources, tools and best practices to help get you there.

Join us as expert faculty present innovations, ideas and lessons learned that will have broad and immediate application and impact on environments for aging.

EBD JOURNAL CLUB
Digital Blue Space: Can Sensory Waterscapes Reduce Stress and Anxiety in Healthcare Spaces?
December 17, 2024

Ocean waves. A running stream. A cascading waterfall. The sights and sounds of moving water have long been recognized for their calming qualities. Biophilic research suggests that the presence of water can reduce stress, reduce blood pressure and increase circulation.

This Journal Club meeting explores the effectiveness of a technology-based design solution to incorporate the healing effects of water without the risks presented by physical water features. In the study being presented, the authors examined whether the visual and auditory calming characteristics of physical water can be delivered through a technology-based solution – digital blue space – to incorporate the healing benefits of water into healthcare designs.

Hear and discuss with the authors the background, methods and results that informed their conclusion: “The utilization of sensory waterscapes can also provide a cost affordable, non-pharmacological, alternative for anxiety mitigation for patients and staff undergoing high-stress situations.”

Color in Care: How Mindful Design Can Improve Spaces

Color is a key component of any professional branding or design endeavor, and the use of color in health care settings is no exception. Although color psychology has the potential to affect patient experiences and outcomes, it remains relatively underexplored relative to its extensive use in marketing.1 As research consistently demonstrates the profound impact of color on consumer behavior, there is a compelling case for applying these insights to patient floors, waiting rooms, and physician branding.

Biophilia: Designing With Nature

Designing with nature in mind comes from careful, thorough, and intentional product selection, keeping materials, sourcing, and quality in mind. For those looking for biophilic design in office spaces, the benefits extend beyond aesthetics. Studies have shown that incorporating natural elements in the workplace can lead to increased creativity, productivity, and overall employee well-being.
