In Three Weeks
It’s hard to believe a year has passed since we launched our partnership with the American Society for Health Care Engineering (ASHE) to enhance engagement between the healthcare design and healthcare provider communities. It’s become obvious through our interactions with ASHE that this level and quality of designer-provider conversation and collaboration has been much needed and long overdue.
Most exciting and rewarding has been our new role as Strategic Educational Collaborator with the American Hospital Association (AHA) and ASHE, and the transition of our conference affiliation and educational healthcare design programming to the PDC Summit, where we have joined eleven other industry-leading non-profit associations as a Supporting Organization.
Our first PDC Summit in March 2024 in San Diego was everything we hoped for and more. We debuted our new Research, Design & Outcomes learning track with 12 exceptional sessions by our research staff, environment networks, and healthcare design's foremost thinkers. And we re-connected with old friends and made new ones at our wine and cheese social, at our booth, and throughout the four-day event.
And now we’re packing up for Atlanta!
At the 2025 PDC Summit March 9 to 12 we’ll be showcasing an expanded 25-session track PLUS our pre-conference workshop on Integrating Lean and Evidence-Based Design. Course topics run the gamut, from Design Research, Design for Patient Experience and Outcomes, Technology and Design, and Behavioral Health Design, to Pediatric Healthcare Design, Design for Staff Wellness, and The Business of Design. Check them all out here.
New this year, we’ll be sharing insights into Center programs, tools and resources on the Exhibit Hall Discovery Stage. And the biggest news – we’ll be celebrating the achievements of our Touchstone Award recipients, Healthcare Environment Award winners, New Investigator Award winners, and Changemaker and Lifetime Achievement honorees at our inaugural Center for Health Design Awards Ceremony and Changemaker Keynote on the Summit main stage on Tuesday, March 11.
One of the things our friends told us last year that they really liked about the Summit was the value – four-day, full-conference registration is just $1,325. And all Center Affiliate and Environment Network members pay the discounted ASHE member price – just $1,150, saving you an additional $175. There’s still time to check out the full Summit agenda and register here.
We’d love to see you there!
Be Well,

“Where’s the innovation!?!” has been a rallying cry heard in recent years throughout the healthcare design industry. Many cite a stifling aversion to risk as the chief culprit. But is that really the root cause?
If not, then what’s blocking our progress and how can we break through the innovation logjam?
Attend this webinar to hear The Center’s VP for Research, Ellen Taylor, explore the relationship between invention, inquiry and innovation; identify eight sources of innovation; and, provide examples of the resulting innovations (or potential innovations) specific to healthcare design.

The Art of Design and Compliance
|
In the complex world of health care design and delivery, communicating project intent and requirements across a multidisciplinary group can be challenging. The use of accepted codes, standards and guidelines provides a measure of security and protection. However, these terms can be confusing, and their differences are not always clear.

How to Design Senior Care Facilities for Veterans
|
Home should be a safe place to come to every day. It’s where you should be able to rest your head at night without fear and receive care from loved ones. However, not everyone is that lucky. For some people, home isn’t the paradise that many have made it be. Veterans, for example, have a unique set of needs that aren’t easily met in regular care settings, especially as they age.

Behavioral Health Design: Where We Are, Where We’re Headed
|
The growing emphasis on behavioral health has broadened its integration into diverse building typologies. Once confined to standalone facilities, behavioral health design is now influencing schools, workplaces, housing, correctional centers and more. This shift responds to a rising awareness and the destigmatizing of mental health issues. Teletherapy, resilience apps, and community-based care networks have become vital tools for supporting mental well-being. So, too, has architecture.

Hospital Design Trends for Greater Comfort and Efficiency
|
In the years immediately before the pandemic, a growing understanding of the link between mental, emotional, and physical health was leading hospital architecture away from the cold, clinical aesthetic of the past and toward a warmer, more comforting atmosphere. The pandemic uncovered a need for further modernization. Today’s hospitals are designed for efficient, comfortable accommodation for large numbers of people, while maintaining an atmosphere as safe as it is welcoming.
