Healthcare Art Consulting

Why we are an EDAC Advocate:

“What has been a dilemma for our company is getting ten or more people in a room to decide selection of artwork. Now, we use research and evidence that is available to us to let our clients know that it’s not their personal selection of art that is most important, but it’s what is best for the healing environment, patients, staff, caregivers and desired outcomes.”

–Jerry Joyner, Chief Executive Officer at Healthcare Art Consulting

Evidence-Based Design In Practice

Case Study: Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center, Dallas, TX

Traditionally, health care project teams recruit art consultants during the design and construction phases of new construction. With evidence-based design (EBD) projects, art consultants are best utilized when added to the project team during project planning and design.

In the Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center at Dallas new construction project, Healthcare Art Consulting was selected as the art consultant during in 2008 even though first phases of construction will not be completed until early 2011. The project includes construction of a new ten-story, 450,000 square foot outpatient cancer center and a new 120 bed inpatient cancer hospital that will provide a full range of cancer related services including physician offices, radiation, chemotherapy, pain management and complementary medicine, such as massage therapy and support groups.

In early 2009, executive leadership at Baylor Health Care System agreed with Healthcare Art Consulting to conduct a focus group study to determine the preferred artwork of patients, staff and community members who will utilize the new facilities. A two part focus group was conducted in 2009, one with health care project team members, current and previous cancer patients, and cancer center volunteers. After analysis of the focus group results, a larger focus group survey was conducted in September 2009. Using a simple survey, over 500 individuals were surveyed and their feedback was valuable in determining direction for the artwork in the new Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center.

Now patients, caregivers, staff, volunteers, and community members will benefit from incorporating their feedback into the selection of artwork elements in the beginning of the facility’s life. Our client Baylor Health Care System will benefit financially from making the right decisions early in the project development.
Our team also plans to conduct follow-up surveys after the facility opens in 2011.  Learn more and download resources.
