This webinar will focus on an exploratory approach to the role of evidence-based design in the rural healthcare setting.  Haddox will present the observations, conversations, participatory research methods, and thought processes that led him to explore how the delivery of healthcare in his largely rural native West Virginia might be improved through a focus on the physical facilities.  He will describe research projects that examine how the barriers to care in these rural areas, including his approach to engaging stakeholders to gather data, some upcoming projects in the works with special healthcare needs populations, and a larger framework for interdisciplinary research in the rural health care setting.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the scale of healthcare delivery in the rural setting

  • Understand and incorporate participatory research techniques

  • Describe the Outpatient Health Care Usability Profile (OHCUP) tool

  • Discuss the role healthcare facilities play in supporting or hindering patient health outcomes

Presenting Faculty

Chris Haddox, PhD, Assistant Professor of Sustainable Design at West Virginia University

Chris Haddox, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Sustainable Design at West Virginia University.  His teaching efforts revolve around the Minor in Sustainable Design—a robust program he created while a Visiting Assistant Professor at WVU.  This minor draws students from across the university who wish to broaden their thinking about the design, development, and management of our communities.

Chris is developing a three-pronged research agenda focused on evidence-based design of rural health care facilities, affordable housing, and music-based community development.  A common thread running through these initiatives is community stakeholder engagement.  Chris was awarded a grant in the Big XII Faculty Fellowship program to develop a partnership with health design colleagues at Texas Tech University.

Chris is a long-standing member of the Board of Directors of Green Advantage®, a national, ANSI Accredited third party environmental certification program, and is Chair of the Woodburn School Redevelopment Commission with the City of Morgantown.  Chris.Haddox@mail.wvu.edu
