Dr. Robert Zarr, a DC Pediatrician and founder of Park Rx America, will discuss how sterile work environments in clinics and hospitals are contributing to doctor burnout and elevated levels of stress and anxiety among patients. From personal experience and research, Dr. Zarr believes that reference to nature in the workplace and providing opportunities for staff and patients to be outdoors in nature-focused settings can help provide relief.

Jack Sullivan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture at the University of Maryland. Professor Sullivan’s recent research focuses on the healing potential of nature in the city. He will discuss how designers around the world are building the “City of To-Morrow”, one project at a time, transforming post-industrial landscapes into places of healing.

Learning Objectives

  • Articulate how research findings show a strong connection between contact with nature and human health.

  • Describe why the absence of nature and the lack of access to nature is contributing to burnout among healthcare providers.

  • Identify how design professionals are incorporating nature or references to nature into their design projects.

  • Examine how the healing impacts of nature are likely to influence urban design and planning for improved population health and wellness.
