In today's rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, data-driven solutions are needed to improving efficiency, safety, and patient experience. The healthcare ecosystem is constantly reshaped by staff turnover, technological advancements, and unanticipated events like pandemics. A well-functioning ecosystem is driven by alignment and adaptability among people, process, and place interactions.

Yet, assessing and benchmarking healthcare ecosystem performance—and developing improvement targets and strategies—remains a challenge due to limited data sharing, unreliable EMR data, and labor-intensive manual tracking. SyncTimes’ real-time locating, communication, and analytics technology fills this gap by providing robust data on staff workflows and patient journeys. In partnership with healthcare clients, we leverage this data for performance monitoring, benchmarking, and informed decision-making to guide operational, facility planning and programming, and clinic design. Results from our collaboration illustrate the transformative potential of using real-world data in driving continuous improvement and shaping the future of healthcare delivery.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe benefits of tracking real-time clinic workflows and patient tracing.
  • Identify opportunities for operational and facility design/planning continuous improvement.
  • Test predictive models built from real-world data when variables such as design layout, staffing ratios, and processes are manipulated.
  • Develop activities to consistently monitor, benchmark, align and improve the design of project ecosystems.

Presenting Faculty

Meredith Banasiak, EDAC, Assoc. AIA

Meredith Banasiak is Director of Research for BA/Science, the research and innovation group of healthcare design firm Boulder Associates. In this role, she conducts real-world research with health systems and design teams to support data-driven, science-informed design. An early adopter of neuroarchitecture, Meredith now serves on the Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture Board of Directors and is a Fellow with the Centre for Conscious Design. Her latest passion project is producing Science + Design, an indie microlearning podcast.

Alan Bucknum

Alan Bucknum is co-founder and CEO at SyncTimes, leading the company in its mission to improve the patient experience through operational efficiencies. Before his work at SyncTimes, Alan developed informatics applications to help Community Health Centers transition to value-based care. Alan loves using data to drive improvements in operational, quality, and financial outcomes.

Kate Galpin

Kate Galpin, a Principal with Boulder Associates, brings over 20 years of experience in healthcare facility planning and design. Her passion is programming and medical planning, and she is a key part of the BA/Science team. She works with project teams to identify project vision and goals; understand existing services and current volumes; align future operational model and throughput assumptions; forecast KPUs to align with growth assumptions; and develop preliminary space programs to right size projects. She is leading the firm’s benchmarking effort to support informed decision making and continuous improvement over time.
