Innovations in Healthcare: The Human-Centered Properties of Flooring, Keith Gray

For many years, there were surprisingly few studies about how flooring affects people, in spite of the fact that it is one of the most pervasive surfaces in a hospital. Fortunately in recent years, especially since the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services stopped paying for “Never Events” in October 2008, technical researchers have conducted innovative testing on how flooring affects acoustics, mobility, slip/fall injuries, anti-fatigue performance and the spread of disease. The results of these studies, which will be presented, combined with research from a diverse body of peer-reviewed literature, will guide architects, designers and facility planners to make well-informed flooring decisions based on human-centered metrics.

Why Functional Programming and Clinical/Technology Planning Must Go Hand in Hand, Christine Chadwick, LEAN

Technology is now the driving force behind clinical operations of the future.  Yet, functional programming often excludes technology and medical equipment planning as a line item “FF&E and IT”.  Changing HC operations and modalities require LEAN processes that are often technology/equipment driven – yet how can it only be a “line” in the overall programme?  This session will illustrate how Technology Planning and Functional Programming must work synergistically to programm better with less square feet!
