Henry Ford Macomb will be expanding its services, which will include approximately 225,000 square feet, 160 beds, patient tower addition on the north side of its campus. A two-story bridge will connect the new tower to the existing hospital. The project will also include an 11,600-square-foot expansion of the hospital’s power plant and provide enhanced infrastructure to service the new tower and existing hospital house. Additional parking and other site improvements are included to provide better and safer navigation of the site. The overall project in total is approximately 350,000 square feet.
GOAL
Increase Efficiency, Improve Care Experience, Promote Quality and Safety, Inspire People, Innovation in the Marketplace, and Decrease Cost
CHALLENGE
Develop design and planning that reflected the community, and their needs and allowed staff to ideate a future process in their new workplace and patient care spaces.
SOLUTION
Allow an interdisciplinary team and stakeholders to engage in a highly effective planning process to create a space that best met their desired goals and objectives through evidence-based design and research-based methods.
KEY FINDINGS, MEASURABLE RESULTS, AND/OR NEXT STEPS
Improving the care experience by fostering family and loved ones' involvement in the design and planning process and providing designated family spaces to support the patient and their needs. Utilizing a mock-up of the patient room provided feedback that 92% of survey respondents agreed that the caregiver area supported the bedside patient care model design. The increased visitor space improved caregiving and research shows reduced patient fall risk and other adverse events. Post-occupancy studies are the next steps.
