Ukegjini, K., Kastiunig, T., Widmann, B., Warschkow, R., & Steffen, T. (2020). Impact of intraoperative noise measurement on the surgeon stress and patient outcomes. A prospective, controlled, single-center clinical trial with 664 patients.

Embark with me on an exploration of operating room acoustics. In my presentation, I delve into the impact of noise on surgical outcomes, drawing from two literature reviews and a clinical trial. As a Ph.D. candidate specializing in hybrid operating rooms, I provide insights into the challenges posed by noise in these dynamic environments. The first review reveals the intricate relationship between noise levels and postoperative complications, highlighting its effects on stress, communication, and performance. The second review delves into the consequences of noise on surgical team functioning and patient care, focusing on communication breakdowns and potential errors. The narrative culminates with a clinical trial that evaluates the effectiveness of a visual noise warning device as an innovative solution to address the issue of excessive noise. In conclusion, these results emphasize the need to address operating room noise for the benefit of both patients and surgical teams. Follow me on this journey where the answer to noise may be found in the surprising combination of visual design elements.

    Hybschmann, J., Topperzer, M. K., Gjærde, L. K., Born, P., Mathiasen, R., Sehested, A. M., Jennum, P. J., & Sørensen, J. L. (2021). Sleep in hospitalized children and adolescents: A scoping review. Sleep Medicine Reviews

This is a 2021 study by Hybschmann and colleagues. This is new from what we’ve done in our prior 5-minute summaries. This is a literature review, in this case a scoping review. A scoping review is a rigorous and systematic way to establish the scope of a body of literature (like the name implies). It establishes an evidence base without producing a summary answer to a specific research question like a systematic review.

The patient perspective is unique, cannot be replicated, and is crucial for designing effective healthcare environments. Every person is an expert when it comes to their own experience, and everyone’s experience is informed by their unique perspective.

    Webinar
    July 2021 Webinar

This webinar will review two separate behavioral health units, one constructed with typical acoustical ceiling tile panels and one with a new acoustic gypsum wallboard ceiling assembly with a similar noise reduction coefficient. A comparison of these two facilities’ acoustic testing results will be discussed along with security concerns, owner requirements, and possible design solutions for this particular sector of healthcare design.

    EDAC Advocate Firm Project
July 2021 EDAC Advocate Firm Project

This evaluation assessed two main clinic module designs—separate versus shared corridors—in the Advocate Aurora Health system. The goal was to identify and assess pros and cons of each module type from the user perspective to help inform and optimize the system’s future ambulatory program and facilities.
