Three units were analyzed including Critical Care, Medical Oncology and Obstetrics in order to track clinical behaviors and to identify opportunities for improvement for the newly designed space. The travel study indicated for all units measured that the time spent on value added care, the time spent on direct care, and the aisle effectiveness all increased from current to future state workflow and generally outperformed the national benchmarks for their corresponding unit types. Additionally, review the process and results of the post-occupancy evaluation.

Patient falls are the most common adverse event reported in acute care settings, affecting from between 2% to 10% of annual hospital admissions. Patient falls cause increased morbidity, mortality, length of stay, and have significant cost impacts. One recent study examined the relationship of design factors in patient rooms to falls in 30 units in 15 hospitals. Results indicate key factors associated with higher numbers of falls, including multi-person rooms, shared toilet rooms, number and location of grab bars, and others. Explore the intrinsic and extrinsic factors on fall risk and the role design plays in mitigating these factors through real design solutions.

Health design is fraught with myths that impede our ability to capture the benefits of evidence-based design. Although many researchers and practitioners are discovering and sharing new evidence, we still need help putting it into practice to improve healthcare experiences and outcomes. For each myth, evidence from a legend—a person, organization, or industry— is shared to prove its falsehood and demonstrate an exemplary evidence-based action.

This webinar discusses how different modeling and simulation approaches best serve different goals. Learn how statistical methods allow models to be run over time and predict future needs for people, space and equipment. Virtual reality and full scale mockup methods allow a wider range of stakeholders to meaningfully participate throughout a design process, including during early design. Modeling and simulation can also support and amplify the impact of an EBD-based design program.

For over 30 years, ambulatory care environments have been a major force in patient care delivery.  Today’s drivers of new technology, less invasive procedures, the Affordable Care Act, and consumer demands, are transforming these environments right out of the box. We are seeing new delivery model of specialized clinics in strip malls and even wellness campus providing a full spectrum of outpatient care and the Veteran Affairs developing the Medical Home and Telemedicine. And it is all happening with lightning speed. Outpatient surgeries have increased by two thirds since 2006. Nearly 75% of elective surgeries are performed as outpatient procedures, and it is not stopping there.

For the 2014 cycle of the Facility Guidelines Institute's health care design guidelines, a brand new volume is being developed for residential and senior living facilities; entitled the Guidelines for Residential Care Facilities: Design & Construction of Health, Care, and Support Facilities. This guideline includes nursing homes, hospice, assisted living, independent living, adult day care, and wellness/diagnostic facilities. The vetted approach to the guidelines is to provide design information, as well as parameters for Authorities Having Jurisdiction to evaluate and incorporate culture change and resident-centered approaches to the residential-based care.

Positive distractions have been found to reduce stress and improve healthcare outcomes. However, research on this topic is generally lacking in certain pediatric settings. This webinar details recent studies that examined the effects of positive distraction interventions on pediatric patients and their families but used different methods in different settings. The in-depth findings and practical knowledge around the process of implementing two research studies is beneficial to researchers and designers.

Can stress make you sick? Do the place and space around you affect your health? Discuss how the physical environment can affect emotions negatively or positively by triggering the brain’s stress or relaxation responses. This webinar helps healthcare providers judge how and when to apply mind-body therapies in conjunction with classical therapeutic approaches to maintain health, and assists healthcare designers to create spaces that support and facilitate healing.
