While risks of handling pathogens in a laboratory can be well-characterized, controlled and mitigated, the risks in healthcare setting are much more difficult to control. We’ll identify the risks in healthcare settings and how to reduce them – beyond what’s currently seen in the ER intake and biocontainment patient suites – by applying fundamental facility design principles related to biocontainment. The presentation will evaluate existing and new facilities designed for patient safety, and discuss lessons learned and modifications that can improve safety.

Cyndi McCullough, MSN, EDAC
Evidence-Based Design Director, HDR 

With 30 years of experience as a registered nurse, Cyndi brings a clinical and operational understanding to facility operations planning and programming. As a clinician and planner, she works with clients to understand the impact of strategic and operational planning as well as technology on space needs in healthcare facilities. She is Lean Healthcare certified and works with clients to establish performance goals for improved operational efficiencies and provides clinical guidance in determining ideal functional relationships and adjacencies for master facility planning. She is the editor of the books “Evidence-based Design for Health Facilities” and “Creating Responsive Solutions to Healthcare Change” and in 2007 was selected by Healthcare Design Magazine as 1 of 20 individuals who are making a difference in advancing the design of healthcare facilities.

 

Andy Yosten, PE, LEED AP BD+C
Managing Engineering Principal, HDR

Andy is an Associate Vice President and the Managing Engineering Principal in Omaha, NE for HDR Architecture.  He received his Masters of Architectural Engineering from the University of Nebraska in Omaha and is a licensed mechanical engineer.  With over 10 years of engineering experience designing healthcare facilities, Andy has gained a wide spectrum of design knowledge working with local, national, and international clients.   As the mechanical engineer, Andy is responsible for developing the mechanical design consistent with the overall design concept including HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and building management systems as well as energy and life-cycle cost analyses. He works closely with the client and all internal disciplines to ensure the mechanical engineering requirements for the project are realized. As the regional mechanical leader of HDR's internal Architectural Engineering Advisory Team, Andy is intimately involved with integrating innovation and sustainability into the practice while constantly improving the quality of work.
