Quality healthcare is not explicitly synonymous with efficiency, but Intermountain Healthcare is determined to deliver both. Hear how the largest healthcare provider in Utah has taken its knowledge and application of Lean principles to plant the seeds to take the system to a new level. Park City Medical Center and the Cottonwood Clinic will be offered as case studies and described in terms of process, planning, and tools used to affect change. A thorough discussion of quantifiable, initial outcomes, including how design solutions have impacted change across an entire health system, will be discussed.

Learning Objectives

  • Discover how a single ambulatory clinic design/build can be the catalyst for cultural change for an entire healthcare system.

  • Identify how baseline design planning and operational improvements can cultivate exponential change.

  • Learn about “the magic moment” for cultural change, when ownership of Lean principles transfers from the design and leadership team to staff.

  • Explore methods and tools for executing successful client engagement workshops.

Presenting Faculty

Barbara Anderson, Principal and Senior Medical Planner Quality

Barbara Anderson is a Principal and Senior Medical Planner with extensive experience in healthcare programming, planning and operations. Her 12 years of experience as a clinical nurse provide a unique perspective in bridging the gap between operations, planning, and design. She has developed an advanced understanding and approach to integrating Lean principles into the planning and design process and her contributions working as a member of an integrated design team have resulted in developing new models of care along with significant operational efficiencies and financial savings for clients. In a recent academic project, she led teams to integrate disparate service lines into a shared environment for surgery, endoscopy, cardiovascular, and endovascular services. The outcome will streamline the procedural experience for patients and families, improve patient safety, and eliminate redundancies – saving space for value-added patient care and improving processes that will reduce costs.
