Join us to hear how STUDIO E, an ERDMAN Center of Thought Leadership & Innovation in Healthcare, is working with several behavioral health clients on the hypothesis, “Can concepts driving culture change in senior living and other aspects of healthcare – such as small household design and on-stage/off-stage planning – translate in a behavioral healthcare setting to facilitate an effective balance between safety and patient comfort, dignity, and control?” Related to this hypothesis is the thought: Can architecture influence behavior? We believe the answer is yes, by having a human-scaled environment of care. In support of the ongoing work around this hypothesis, Jennifer will share case studies and work on the boards of a variety of projects embracing this approach.

"Safe Emergency Departments through Innovative Design, Technologies and Staffing Considerations"

This webinar will explore the impacts architects, planners and interior designers can have on the behavioral health epidemic. While, as designers, we have little control over funding and other socio-economic factors that contribute to the crisis, but what we do have is the ability to increase efficiency for the caregivers with our designs and the ability to positively enhance the patients experience.
Shary Adams, AIA, ACHA, EDAC, LEED AP BD+C, Principal, SmithGroup
Shary Adams is an accomplished medical planner, architect and designer with a broad array of skills who specializes in behavioral health, patient care and emergency department design. She is a principal with SmithGroup, an international architecture, planning, interior design and integrated engineering firm.
A graduate of the University of Toronto, she received a Bachelor’s of Architecture in 1987, and is a board-certified American College of Healthcare Architect as well as EDAC-accredited. Shary has over 30 years of experience in planning and designing major healthcare projects for leading clients including Johns Hopkins Hospital, MedStar Health, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. She recently completed the planning for 1+- million-square-foot integrated medical centers in the Middle East and China.
Through numerous interviews with clinicians, administrators, and patients, as well as visioning workshops and tours of leading care facilities, her depth of knowledge allows for innovation in addressing complex issues from new care models to evidence-based design choices and patient safety.
Jill Johnson, FACHE, Vice President, Operations, MedStar Harbor Hospital, Regional Vice President, Behavioral Health, MedStar Health
Jill Johnson serves as the vice president of Operations for MedStar Harbor Hospital, a member of MedStar Health, the largest healthcare provider in Maryland and the Washington, D.C., region. In this role, she is a key architect of strategies that define the hospital’s growth and drive its journey from good to great. She oversees Clinical Engineering, Clinical Laboratory, Emergency Preparedness, Environmental Services, Facility Services, Food Services, Imaging, Physician Enterprise, Protective Services and Safety. Johnson additionally serves as MedStar’s regional vice president for Behavioral Health—a service line dedicated to providing critical patient populations with a range of professional care for behavioral and mental health issues, as well as addiction treatment services.
Kevin Haggerty, Sr. Project Manager, CBRE Healthcare | MedStar Health System, MedStar Washington Hospital Center
Kevin Haggerty has been a Senior Project Manager for CBRE and Contractual Director at Medstar Washington Hospital Center for the past three years he has previously held similar positions with Adventist Healthcare and Kaiser Permanente, prior to that he worked at Clark Construction. Kevin holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering Washington University in St. Louis and an MBA from the University Of Maryland Smith School Of Business. He also holds certifications as a certified healthcare constructor and LEED Accredited professional. He has extensive experience in healthcare planning design and construction and has a passion for solving complex problems through utilization and creation of tools to support and provide clarity and direction – supplying the information to leaders to empower them to make decisions that advance their organizations.
Jennifer Edmonds, MLIS, EDAC, Market Intelligence Analyst, ERDMAN
Jennifer joined ERDMAN in 2011 and serves the organization with market intelligence insights and information resources. Trained as a librarian, she provides business intelligence and market forecasting research, and insights and trends in healthcare.
Currently, Jennifer is leading ERDMAN’s Evidence-Based Design Accreditation Certification (EDAC) training program and provides related research for project teams. She has also provided EBD research consulting for clients.
Additionally, Jennifer supports the ERDMAN Experts thought leadership program with research and writes e-news and social media content related to healthcare strategy and facility trends. Her research interests include emerging outpatient clinic operational and facility design models and evidence-based design (EBD) research related to family-oriented design. She has presented at Healthcare Design, Environments for Aging, National Association of Community Health Centers, and American Academy of Orthopedic Executives’ conferences and has participated in a handful of competitions and workshops with the Institute for Patient-Centered Design.
Dennis C. Robert, AIA, Principal | Studio Director, Array Architects
Dennis Robert, a Principal and Studio Director with Array Architects, has been dedicated to the pursuit of optimal healthcare design and project management his entire career. From his native Louisiana to New York and Charlotte to Anchorage, Dennis has developed client solutions with planners, clinicians, operations and data analysts. While Dennis’ interest in the operational side of healthcare remain important, there is nothing he feels can shadow the patient experience and designing to the patients’ needs holistically, clinical need as well as experiential. Further he believes these aspects can coexists. Of the many service lines and aspects of care Dennis has designed, Emergency Care has been integral to his career, designing over 40 emergency Departments all of which address behavioral health, most have had dedicated units.
