In today’s healthcare market, designers enhance brand recognition in addition to designing physical space. The Mother Baby Center – a partnership between Allina Health and Children’s Minnesota – was one of the first facilities in the country to use art and architecture to assist in creating a complete brand that would carry through all three locations, while maintaining a unique identity of each. This session will discuss the challenges and outcomes of brand creation for the project, both architecturally and artistically.

Learning Objectives

  • Illustrate the value that art and architecture can bring in reinforcing a client’s brand to convey their organizational mission and values.

  • Summarize challenges of incorporating a brand into an architectural design specific to highly regulated healthcare industry.

  • Identify how recent trends in healthcare design industry impact an organization’s brand promise, and influence design approach for its healthcare facilities.

  • Formulate concrete steps in the process of building a brand through utilizing architectural and artistic language.

Presenting Faculty

Kurt Johnson, Owner, Kurt Johnson Photography

Kurt Johnson has over 35 years of professional photography experience. Beginning his photography career as a photojournalist, Kurt later moved into architectural photography, working for some of the nation’s largest architectural and engineering firms. His extensive travels throughout the United States and abroad provided the opportunity to photograph beautiful natural healing landscapes and botanical images. Combined with his innate understanding of the benefits of Biophilic design, his nature photography is now featured in healthcare facilities throughout the country, including the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Kurt has won numerous local and national awards for his journalistic, architectural and nature photography.

Carolyn Johnson, Owner, Kurt Johnson Photography

Carolyn Johnson left the corporate environment after 20+ years to lead sales and marketing as Principal of Kurt Johnson Photography in December of 2015, and is a passionate fit for the many hats she wears. Part entrepreneur, part nature lover, marketing and selling the photography that her husband Kurt shoots is a natural fit! Although a true environmentalist, her past experiences in driving sales and market share growth in both the advertising and technology fields prepared Carolyn for the challenge of the global footprint of Kurt Johnson Photography (KJP). She leads sales strategies and marketing efforts for KJP and deeply enjoys connecting with clients and industry professionals.
