Emergency departments are losing efficiency with the growing number of mental health patients being seen and cared for. One solution is to provide the appropriate environment to address specific needs of mental health patients. This webinar will examine the Behavioral Health Crisis Stabilization Unit as a case study, including direct outcomes achieved by the project. Since opening, the unit has had a positive effect on the ED, lessening mental health patients in the ED and decreasing the psychiatric inpatient admission rates for patients. Planning, design, and specific details of the unit will be discussed in depth to give webinar attendees working knowledge of how to approach and execute a similar unit.

Scott Hansche, AIA, is a registered architect with 33 years of experience in Healthcare Planning and Design. Scott has planned, designed and constructed over 6 million square feet of Healthcare Facilities across the country. As a principal with CBRE | Heery he has lead healthcare projects, including the University of Iowa Crisis Stabilization Unit, for the last 25 years. He has directed over 750,000 square feet of behavioral health design in 5 states. His work has been published in national healthcare magazines and has been recognized by his peers.
Luke Leyden, AIA, LEED AP, Design Leader, University of Iowa Healthcare
Luke Leyden, AIA, is a registered architect overseeing design within the 4.75 million square feet of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics facilities. Luke has spent the last 14 years focusing exclusively on the design of health care facilities, looking for ways to improve the patient and visitor experience. He brings a key understanding of the implications design can have on the patients and the facility that serves them. Luke oversaw the planning and design of the Crisis Stabilization Unit at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and has in-depth knowledge of the operational workings and successful project outcomes.

Hannah Roush, AIA, is a registered architect designing healthcare environments for patients and their families. Since joining CBRE | Heery 8 years ago, Hannah has worked closely with clients, staff, and user groups, communicating the design intentions and ensuring the current designs meet the needs and desires of the client and the patient. Hannah pays attention to the details that increase patient satisfaction and brings a fresh and creative understanding to healthcare design.
