This webinar highlights a case study of the ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development and explores how the design caused the building itself to become a tool for therapy, learning, and teaching. Robert Hofmann will identify how the building enhanced therapy for children with physical and behavioral disabilities through the use of multisensory stimulation rooms, landscape, innovative approaches to learning, expression of play, achievement, and memory, as well as a "going to school" experience for children in the autism program. The ages of ErinoakKids range from newborn to 18 years, so it was critical that the design supported the wide range of patient needs and incorporated design principles that are child-friendly without being child-like. Come hear how they did it!

 

Learning Objectives

  • Examine how the building introduced innovative approaches to learning through integrated technology such as the use of multisensory engagement.
  • Measure the value of outdoor landscaping in the treatment of five different therapy typologies.
  • Transform daily routine and activity into a learning opportunity such as creative play and gross motor development through the use of climbing walls.
  • Expose key building elements to reveal inner components for educational value through the use of truth windows and interactive play.

Robert Hofmann, Principal, Hofmann PM Inc.

Robert Hofmann, Principal of Hofmann PM Inc., is a specialist in Public, Private and Institutional Capital Redevelopment projects, with a focus primarily in the health care sector. With 24 years of experience and building on a strong background of planning and construction, Robert has successfully directed a number of initiatives including a 290,000 square foot development on behalf of ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development of three new Children’s Treatment Facilities in Halton and Peel Regions in Ontario, Canada. The project was managed under the Infrastructure Ontario, P3, Design Build Finance model.
