Health-related building standards, such as the WELL Building Standard, align with design strategies and technologies that support physical activity and reduce sedentariness. One approach to promoting physical activity and less sedentary behavior is through the promotion of “active living,” defined as integrating any form of physical activity into daily routines. In this webinar, attendees will learn about various low-, medium, and high-tech design features, of varying cost ranges, that can be integrated into senior residential environments. They’ll also hear about older adults’ attitudes and intentions to use these design products. Implications for the architecture and design community will also be highlighted.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify currently available design and ambient assistive technologies that support active living in residential environments.
  • Recognize which design features and/or assistive technologies may be more appropriate for different older adult populations and for different ranges of incomes or ability levels.
  • Discuss the main factors that influence older adults’ home technology adoption decisions.
  • Understand the implications of the results of a mixed-methods research study regarding policy and design process decisions and how they apply to the larger design community.
