MARCH 2023

Future Focus

Dear Colleague,

As we reach the three-year mark since the un-official start of the pandemic, I continue to be amazed and grateful to be part of an industry that responded with such resourcefulness, innovation and compassion in the face of such unanticipated challenges.

While our profession has always been forward-thinking and improvement-driven, the pandemic heightened our attention, desire and need to better anticipate “what’s next”.

To help our community retain and sharpen that future focus, we’re bringing together for a full-day virtual workshop an extraordinary group of expert analysts to help us better understand and take on the new and emerging drivers that are impacting healthcare design planning, methods and budgets.

Whether you are looking to futurize your organization, project plans or personal skillset, you don’t want to miss this: Into the Future: Key Drivers Influencing Healthcare Design, March 23, 2023.

While factors like cost, patient experience and health outcomes continue to dominate design and construction decisions, a whole new set of drivers – from staff well-being, climate change, and equity and access, to resiliency, community health and regulatory issues – are taking center stage.

Led by the esteemed Kirk Hamilton, our experts will break down these key drivers into actionable guidance for design, facility, product and care professionals across the spectrum of care environments.

I can tell that this is going to be one of those “Wow!” days. I hope you and your team will join us.

Be well,

Debra Levin, Hon. FASID, EDAC
President and CEO

P.S. I was just reminded that tomorrow, March 10 at midnight is the Advance Discount Rate deadline. It’s not a lot, but then neither is the workshop. Why not grab it while you can?

Member Project: New Acute Care Patient Tower

To increase efficiency and improve the care experience, AECOM worked with Henry Ford Macomb to expand its services and create a new acute patient care tower. Approximately 225,000 square feet with 160 beds, the project will also include an expansion of the hospital’s power plant and provide enhanced infrastructure.

Slidecast: Evaluating the Impacts of Color, Graphics, and Architectural Features on Wayfinding

There has been a lot of research on wayfinding dating back to the 80s and 90s. Since then, we know that ineffective wayfinding can increase anxiety and operational costs of staff. This study used VR immersion with physiological EEG sensors to help us understand what really makes the environment work as a holistic system for navigation.

Industry News Briefs

Health Equity: 'A Moral Imperative'

Health equity has emerged as a pressing issue in U.S. healthcare during the coronavirus pandemic. In particular, there have been COVID-19 health disparities for many racial and ethnic groups that have been at higher risk of getting sick and experiencing relatively high mortality rates.
Health Leaders Media,

We Need to Design Health Technology with The Clinician in Mind

Burnout in health care is now being called a public health crisis-it affects clinicians, their families, patients, organizations, and the health of communities. It also has the potential to negatively impact the future of health care. Burnout leads to more experienced clinicians leaving the field sooner than they might otherwise do, and discourages the next generation from rising (or remaining) in the field to fill that void.
Medical Economics,

Ambulatory Surgery Center Design with Patients and Staff in Mind

Patients elect to have certain procedures performed at ambulatory surgery centers in lieu of a hospital in order to optimize their patient experience through convenience, cost savings and high-quality care. The procedure might be cataract surgery, tendon repair, a lumpectomy, an eye lift or a colonoscopy. Patients arriving at an ambulatory surgery center are usually sleepy, hungry, thirsty and a bit nervous, so the design of the space facility should immediately communicate hospitality, safety and professional competence.
Healthcare Facilities Today,

We’re Feeling Effects of the Nursing Shortage. Tech Can Help.

Some providers are still hesitant about certain technology advancements, but this article shows not only how critical tech will be to the healthcare industry at large, but also how it can help to lessen the toll of unpredictable crises, like the pandemic or the insurmountable nursing shortage we're currently facing.
