ANNOUNCES

Changemaker and Lifetime Achievement Award Recipients to Be Honored at 2025 PDC Summit in Atlanta

Advancing the Healthcare Design
Process and Patient Experience

Concord, CA – Two special awards will be given by The Center for Health Design at this year’s PDC Summit – The International Summit & Exhibition on Health Facility Planning, Design & Construction – during The Center’s Awards Ceremony and Changemaker Keynote, Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at 8:15 AM ET on the PDC Main Stage.

The Changemaker Award honors individuals or organizations that have demonstrated exceptional ability to change the way healthcare facilities are designed and built, and whose work has broad impact on the advancement of healthcare design. This year, Henry Domke, a former physician turned renowned photographer capturing the healing power of nature through art, is the Changemaker Award recipient.

The Russ Coile Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes individuals who have dedicated their careers to the advancement of the healthcare design field and celebrates their significant contributions. This year's Lifetime Achievement award goes to Douglas S. Erickson, FASHE, co-founder and retired CEO of the Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI), and Senior Advisor at Specified Technologies, Inc.(STI).

The Changemaker Award Recipient

Henry Domke

Henry Domke has been an artist his entire life. After two decades as a family doctor, he retired from medicine to dedicate himself to creating artworks that foster calm and connection with nature in health care spaces. Today, his captivating nature photographs can be viewed in hospitals throughout the United States.

Henry’s sister, an interior designer, introduced him to The Center for Health Design where he discovered research-informed biophilic design and applied that to his own work, creating new ways that nature imagery and thoughtful design can ease stress and make health care experiences more supportive and restorative for everyone involved.

He founded Henry Domke Fine Art in 2003 with an emphasis on using evidence-based design principles to drive every creative decision he makes, from subject selection and materials, to composition and color.

Fort Belvoir Community Hospital in Virginia, a military treatment facility, was his first large contract with the federal government, encompassing 450 pieces across five buildings. Since then he has worked on grand-sized installations more than 50 feet wide, and incorporated new technologies that enable printing on backlit LED panels, fabric, glass, metal and specialized wall coverings. These innovations have made it possible to integrate biophilic design through art into every aspect of a health care environment, enhancing its impact and accessibility.

The Russ Coile Lifetime Achievement
Award Recipient

Douglas S. Erickson, FASHE

For nearly 50 years, Douglas S. Erickson, FASHE, has led the charge to improve the built environment, championing the health care industry’s Facility Guidelines for Design and Construction since 1978, literally saving them — together with Joe Sprague and Armand Burgun — when the Department of Health and Human Services discontinued their publication in 1984.

Doug co-founded the Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI) in 1998 and recruited legions of volunteers over the years to ensure the ongoing maintenance and revision of the Guidelines. He served as vice chair and later chair of the Health Guidelines Revision Committee for five revision cycles and led FGI as CEO from 2015 to 2023. He represented the American Hospital Association / American Society for Health Care Engineering (ASHE) membership for 26 years on national codes, standards and built environment committees.

Recognized through ASHE’s Crystal Eagle Award, FGI’s Pioneer Award and the American College of Healthcare Architects’ Presidential Citation, Doug also has been honored with the creation of the Douglas S. Erickson Health Care Research Award, established by FGI and The Center for Health Design to advance the link between design research and improved health outcomes.
