AUGUST 2019

Inspire Change

We work in an industry that has experienced a lot of change. Adapting to new circumstances and challenges is part of daily life and has become a part of every job description.  Because of this, or in spite of this constant challenge, it is important to recognize the educators, role models, and pioneers who are steadfast influences on keeping a focused vision for the future of healthcare design. The Center is doing just that. Last month we announced the recipients of this year's Changemaker and Russ Coile Lifetime Achievement awards that will be presented at a keynote presentation at Healthcare Design Expo & Conference. The Changemaker Award recipient is David Allison, FAIA, FACHA, alumni distinguished professor and director graduate studies in Architecture + Health at Clemson University. And, the Russ Coile Lifetime Achievement Award recipient is Clare Cooper Marcus, professor emerita, departments of architecture and landscape architecture at the University of California at Berkeley and principal of Healing Landscapes. Both are amazing educators, role models, pioneers and innovators who provide much needed inspiration to create healing spaces.

Don't Forget the Walls!

In the ongoing battle to reduce noise in hospital patient units, much attention has been paid to the floor and the ceiling. Over the years, several case studies have shown that sound-absorbing ceiling tile and carpet can help significantly reduce excess noise on a unit. But what about the walls?

To Reduce Hospital Noise, Researchers Create Alarms that Whistle and Sing

In 2012, Yoko Sen was in an emergency room, tethered to a machine bleating relentlessly in her ear. She was “freaked out,” she said, and felt helpless. When a nurse returned to the room, Ms. Sen asked if it was O.K. the device was screaming. “Yeah, this thing just beeps,” she recalled the nurse saying. Ms. Sen, an electronic musician, was stunned. How could something “so loud and so jarring” be considered normal? “The fear of not knowing amplified the feeling of anxiety,” she said. And how, she wondered, could clinicians withstand the clangor?

Sound Strategy for Senior Environments

A root cause of resident discomfort for seniors during community events, religious services, or dining activities is acoustical deficiencies—or quality sound issues—caused by invisible sound waves blending or reverberating. This problem is compounded by the fact that hearing loss is a natural part of the aging process, resulting in many older adults wearing hearing aids. Rather than provide clarity of sound, these devices amplify the signal, such as a guest speaker, pastor, television, or dining companion, and the noise, including overlapping conversations, background noise, and echoes.
