History in the Making
I know we can all agree, this has been a year like no other. The pandemic and societal shifts have affected everyone, allowing each of us to challenge our approaches to our work and personal lives.
These stressors on ourselves, our friends and family, our organization and our community helped 2020 usher in a growing awareness of the importance of behavioral and mental health. This year has seen an alarming uptick of people seeking help for anxiety and depression.
How can we as a community of architects, designers and manufacturers be a part of continuing to find solutions to help combat these feelings and help to create a healthier, safer and more just society? The Center has been fortunate to have gathered industry leaders who have shared their thoughts and experiences as this year has unfolded - in hopes of helping our community to not only address these issues, but to inspire future designs. Take a look at some of these resulting resources:
I am looking forward to continuing the research and gathering the resources we need to help our communities emerge stronger, better equipped to address the inequities of care, the mental health issues and the latest solutions in pandemic design.

Adelante Healthcare is a nonprofit Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) established in 1979. The center provides comprehensive preventive and primary care through its nine health centers located throughout the Maricopa County in Arizona and neighboring areas.
With a mission to serve low-income, uninsured or underinsured populations, Adelante engages in a patient-centered medical home model of care to achieve population health objectives. About 75% of Adelante’s patients live below 200% of the federal poverty level.

Vertical Hospital Development On The Rise

Once a novelty, the idea of the vertical hospital has gained traction over the past decade as healthcare providers looked to serve patient populations in urban centers. Given the high cost of urban land, building up rather than out is the most feasible approach in a densely populated urban center. While the COVID-19 pandemic has raised new concerns about disease spread in high-rise buildings, leading practices in vertical healthcare design can help safeguard patients and caregivers alike.
