20/20 in 2020

I can think of no better way to start the new year than to have a clear vision of what you and your organization want to accomplish.

The Center can help you not only define goals, but also how to achieve them. We have many virtual and in-person cutting-edge learning opportunities planned this year. We will once again host four strategic design workshops.

The first workshop will address the challenges of designing for behavioral health populations in every healthcare space and will be held in Los Angeles on May 21. Three more workshops will follow in the week of September 21 in Baltimore and will cover behavioral health, aging and pediatric design in three consecutive days.

Want to learn more and receive updates on agendas, early bird discounts and event sponsorships? Simply click here and let us know you want to receive updates via email.

Maybe you need a bit of help with a project. Did you know that our team of top-notch researchers can help you with timely advice or research? They can also provide training on the Safety Risk Assessment Tool to your team. Click here to learn more.

I wish you all a happy new year and am looking forward to seeing many of you at this year's events.

In Healthcare Facility Renovations, Early Partnerships Critical

Healthcare construction in general, and renovation projects in particular, are highly complex. An array of complicated medical gas and mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) systems warrants the early involvement of specialty contractors who offer unique value to project teams.

The early onboarding of specialty contractors in a healthcare renovation project’s lifecycle can play a crucial role in completing projects safely, in a timely manner and with a high level of quality.

How BIM Improves Healthcare Facility Design and Operations

BIM has uses beyond facilitating analysis of building energy. It can also help the design and construction teams produce a better facility. Autodesk defines a building information model (BIM) as “a process that begins with the creation of an intelligent 3D model and enables document management, coordination, and simulation during the entire lifecycle of a project.” That intelligent model can be created such that every detail of the building is modeled and can be used for a variety of analyses.

Safety First in Planning and Design

The delivery of healthcare requires a complex system in which providers interact with patients, technology, equipment, and the physical environment. These interactions are strongly linked to patient and employee safety. In planning for a new healthcare facility, decisions made during the planning process, such as layouts or placement of supplies and fixtures, can have unintentional and significant downstream effects that may lead to hospital-acquired conditions, medical errors, adverse events, system deficiencies, compromised employee safety, and poor job satisfaction.
