The Workshop
The challenges created by today’s growing mental health and substance abuse crises, especially in light of the recent pandemic, reach far beyond the behavioral health unit into emergency departments, outpatient clinics and throughout acute and ambulatory care settings.
To support improved care and enhance staff safety, today’s design, facility and care professionals have to advance their understanding of the environment’s impact on behavioral health care and learn how to incorporate the best and latest design solutions throughout all healthcare setting.
This virtual workshop provides the latest in design thinking for behavioral health care and offers state-of-the-art best practices through thought leader presentations, case studies, and panel discussions. Attendees will have opportunities to pose questions to workshop faculty and interact with fellow attendees in fun and innovative ways.

Experts
Ellen brings over 30 years of experience in architecture, research, and business to leading The Center’s research team. She is a registered architect and member of the American Institute of Architects who was recognized by Healthcare Design as the HCD10 Researcher in 2017, an award recognizing significant contributions to the industry.
Ellen has been responsible for conducting built environment design research, as well as large-scale program management, and extensive cross-departmental coordination. Ellen has a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Cornell University’s College of Architecture, Art and Planning, Global Executive MBA degrees from Columbia University and London Business School, and a PhD in design, patient safety and human factors from Loughborough University in England. She serves on the Executive Committee of the Steering Committee for the FGI Health Guidelines Revisions Committee, the Board of the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health (AAH), and the Editorial Advisory Boards of the Health Environments Research & Design (HERD) Journal and American Journal of Infection Control (AJIC).
Access to adequate mental health care and resources is one of the most pressing crises facing the world. Shary has committed her career to helping organizations expand their mental health services as well as develop new strategies and innovations that improve treatment for those needing this complex medical mental care.
With more than 30 years’ experience in healthcare design and leading integrated teams, Shary excels in getting laser-focused on a problem and defining the best possible solutions. She has shared her expertise in media outlets and has spoken about mental healthcare at domestic and global conferences.
As a senior healthcare architect in the Office of Construction and Facilities Management, Mr. Madani leads the design team for all existing and new “geriatrics” and “mental health” facilities in the VA. A member of the Facilities standards group he has created the national VA design guides for Community Living Centers, Outpatient and Inpatient Mental Health and, has represented VA on the US Access Board. These standards ensure efficient and effective use of resources aimed at increasing the quality of care for the most vulnerable patients- our aging veterans. Prior to his position at the VA, Mr. Madani was at the Department of Health and Human Services overseeing Primary Care Construction grants to the underserved regions of the country. Mr. Madani Has a MS in Aerospace Engineering from University of Maryland and Ph.D. in Healthcare Architecture from Texas A&M University.
Josh Langham's work focuses on increasing opportunities for physical activity and overall health through the design of the built environment. Josh’s multi-agency and cross-disciplinary projects and programs aim to implement Active Design strategies in citywide policies and initiatives. His team is currently leading the update to the City’s Active Design Guidelines, which aims to incorporate guidelines that go beyond the promotion of physical activity, but to promote mental health and social cohesion through the lens of racial justice and equity. He has a degree in landscape architecture from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Master’s degree in Urban Planning from the Wagner School of Public Service at New York University.
Dr. Mills has worked as a Psychologist in the VA since 1994. He currently works in the VA National Center for Patient Safety Field Office in White River Junction VT. He joined NCPS in 2002 and has focused on suicide prevention, patient safety improvement and measuring patient safety in VA, authoring/co-authoring over 120 peer reviewed articles and chapters.
Prior to joining the NCPS he was the Associate Director of the VISN 1 Patient Safety Center of Inquiry and directed several national medical safety improvement projects. From 1994 to 1999 he served as the director of the Evaluation and Brief Treatment of PTSD Unit, and the Director of the PTSD service at the VAMC White River Junction VT.
He has served as the Chair of the Clinical Ethics Committee at the VA Medical Center in White River Junction Vermont since 2002. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth
Tammy Felker is a Healthcare Planner and Behavioral Health Specialist at NBBJ. She is a clinician with 12 years of nursing experience and over 20 years’ experience as a healthcare architect – one of the handful of nurse-architects in the country.
The focus of her career over the past 10+ years has been behavioral health and she is widely recognized for her behavioral health expertise and often presents on the dramatic impact design can have on patient outcomes. She has delivered healing environments for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations. Tammy utilizes Lean principles and transparent communication to translate the needs of patients, staff, and stakeholders into high-performance facilities. She introduces design elements that promote a sense of normalcy and healing while balancing patient and staff safety considerations.
From master planning to programming and planning to design, the scale of projects she has worked on ranges from renovation of a single room to a new, free-standing hospital of 450,000 sf with 172 beds and the ability to expand to 1.2M sf and 600 beds. Clients include: Overlake Medical Center, Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle Children’s Hospital, and Children’s Hospital of Colorado.
As a behavioral health planner and architect, Brian has a deep understanding of current research and trends in mental health design and uses his expertise to create innovative, research-based solutions that improve the patient experience in mental health environments. Brian has served as the mental health expert on numerous projects around the world, holding roles in planning, design, and consulting for inpatient, outpatient, community, and crisis services, guiding project teams towards improved outcomes in mental health environments.
At HDR, Brian leads the behavioral health design studio, introducing current trends and design strategies to a broader team and works with smaller focus groups to discuss and develop strategies to improve the mental healthcare environment for patients and staff. Brian has presented on the topic of mental health at multiple conferences around the country, including the Healthcare Design Conference where he presented his team’s award winning behavioral health patient room design. In addition to building design, Brian works with manufacturers to design and evaluate furniture and accessories for behavioral health environments, focusing on improved safety, comfort, functionality, and aesthetics. He is a member of the Facility Guidelines Institute 2022 Health Guidelines Revision Committee focused on behavioral health design in the emergency department and has been recognized nationally for his contributions to the field.
Brian enjoys finding opportunities to share his passion and expertise with the next generation of architects and designers in his local community. He is currently an adjunct associate professor at the University of Kansas, has served as a design critic and juror for multiple design studios focused on mental health, mentors architecture students at the University of Minnesota.
Laurie Wolf, Ph.D., has more than 20 years of experience in the health care environment. She received her Ph.D. in human factors and ergonomics from Loughborough University. Dr. Wolf is a Certified Professional Ergonomist and certified by the American Society for Quality as a Six Sigma Black Belt. She has published more than 20 peer-reviewed articles and three book chapters. Her interests include improving safety for both patients and staff. By implementing appropriate ergonomic interventions in industrial and hospital environments, she has achieved outcomes such as preventing accidents, increasing productivity, lowering injury rates, and reducing worker's compensation costs. Her recent health care work involves quality improvement projects to achieve efficient processes and error proofing that result in a safe environment for staff and patients. Outcomes include 25 percent reduction in falls, over 30 percent reduction in pressure ulcers, 80 percent improvement in physician communication and decrease in length of stay and discharge times.
Robert Trestman received his Ph.D. in Psychology and M.D. from the University of Tennessee and trained in psychiatry and neurobiology at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He has authored over 180 peer reviewed articles and other publications, and is the senior editor of the first textbook in the field of correctional psychiatry, the Oxford Textbook of Correctional Psychiatry. Dr. Trestman is the co-developer of START NOW, a skills-based psychotherapy in use in five countries. Dr. Trestman has given over 150 regional, national, and international invited presentations. Dr. Trestman is the Chair of the APA Council on Healthcare Systems & Financing, is Chair-Elect of the American Hospital Association’s Behavioral Health Council, serves as Chair of the Research Committee of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law Institute for Education and Research, and chairs the American Association of Chairs of Departments of Psychiatry’s Clinical Enterprise Committee.
Frederick Foote (CAPT, MC, USN, ret.) is a Scholar at the Institute for Integrative Health (Baltimore). He is Project Officer for the Green Road Project at Naval Support Activity, Bethesda, MD (home of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center). The Green Road is the Nation's largest wild-type healing garden.
Naomi's primary areas of interest are restorative and therapeutic landscapes, evidence-based design, healthcare design, and salutogenic (health-promoting) design. Other interests include environmental justice, environmental psychology, translational research, environments for specific populations, cultural geography, and intersectionality.
Naomi is Founding Director of the Therapeutic Landscapes Network, a non-profit knowledge base and online interactive space for information about landscapes that promote health and well-being. She has published and presented nationally and internationally on the positive role of nature in human health. Amongh other publications, Naomi is co-author with Clare Cooper Marcus of the book Therapeutic Landscapes: An Evidence-Based Approach to Designing Healing Gardens and Restorative Outdoor Spaces. Naomi is Co-Editor with Jan Stichler and Kirk Hamilton of the peer-reviewed journal, Health Environments Research & Design.
